ABOUT ME

HOW I TEACH

After being diagnosed with colitis, a torn disc at L5/S1, a buging disc into my spinal canal at L4/L5, and burning out from working over a decade of 100 hour weeks, I knew something had to change.  Working harder, as I had done to graduate in the top 5% of my class from Harvard Business School, was not going to solve my issues.

I found deepening my yoga practice and focusing on the breath to be of great help to me.  I am sharing some of my favorite resources with the hopes that your journey maybe easier.

I have never done dance, nor ever been the most flexible person in any yoga class.   Yoga for me exists on a mental level, not a physical level.  The physical postures are only a way to achieve the mental peace or connection we all desire.

I started my yoga journey in Boston, was the most unfit person practicing at Kindness in Denver, completed my 200 hour teacher training at Core Power Yoga, and completed my 500 hour teacher training at Yoga Tree under Janet Stone and Harvey Deutch.  While I don't have any formal credentials from Nancy Gilgoff or David Williams they remain my most influential teachers, and I try to study with them as often as possible.

I have been investing much of my time in creating and directing my own prana.  Yogis believe that prana, or energy, is generated via practicing yoga correctly.  This is a 100% endorphin, 0% adrenaline experience.

I have created this website with the goal of sharing some of the information that has taken me thousands of hours to accumulate with the hopes that your own yoga journey may be lighter.

Namaste,
Matt

I am not a doctor and you should discuss any yoga practice, reading, diet changes, or any lifestyle changes with your doctor.

I aspire to help students realize the unique fire within themselves via breath, support, and community.

Right now I only teach regular classes at City Jail #4 in San Francisco.  You may find me subbing around the Bay Area occasionally.

I try to honor each individual's voice and choice.  My best learnings from my teachers have come from intense breath training, quick movements without rest to generate heat and internal cleansing, and bakti focused modern music.

Come to your mat and do your work and trust it will be there when you need it.

Namaste,
Matt

"Coming back after seven months in Indian villages, I saw the craziness of the Western world as well as its capacity for rational thought.  If you just sit and observe, you will see how restless your mind is.  If you try to calm it, it only makes it worse, but over time it does calm, and when it does, there's room to hear more subtle things--that's when your intuition starts to blossom and you start to see things more clearly and be in the present moment.  You see so much more than you could before.  It's a discipline; you have to practice it."
