Crystals, Gemstones, and Metals.

Crystals have long been used by yogis and spiritual practitioners as tools for meditation, grounding, and energetic alignment.

Many believe that the light, color, and natural vibration of certain stones can help quiet the fluctuations of the mind and connect us to something greater than ourselves. While the idea of healing stones may seem implausible—how could a rock help change a bad habit or calm the mind?—it’s worth noting that Western medicine uses light therapy to treat depression. Could it be that light, even refracted through a crystal, subtly influences how we feel or focus?

At present, there’s no scientific consensus that crystals create physiological effects beyond the placebo response. Peer-reviewed studies have not confirmed that crystals emit healing energy that directly affects the body or mind. Still, the placebo effect is a powerful and measurable force—and belief alone can sometimes change biology. Perhaps hope, ritual, and mindful attention are part of the medicine.

That said, crystals do have fascinating physical properties. Some, like quartz, exhibit piezoelectricity—they generate a small electrical charge when compressed or subjected to mechanical stress.

This property makes them useful in modern technologies, such as watches, microphones, and ultrasound devices. While this doesn’t mean crystals heal in a medical sense, it does remind us that stones can interact with energy in measurable, albeit subtle, ways.

The good news? A simple, affordable crystal—whether placed on your altar, worn as jewelry, or held in meditation—has never, to my knowledge, caused harm. And for many, the beauty and symbolism are meaningful enough.

Some yogis cleanse their crystals in saltwater or alkaline water to release stagnant energy, soaking them for up to two days. Others recharge their stones in sunlight or moonlight. Some even pair crystals with essential oils, believing that the energetic imprint of a cleansed stone enhances the potency of the oil. [1]

Whether or not you believe in their metaphysical power, crystals can serve as reminders—to slow down, to breathe, to return to center. And sometimes, that gentle shift is all we need.

[1] One way to look at it is this: if light represents consciousness or enlightenment, all beings may be manifestations of light at different frequencies (151).

Crystals and Gemstones to Balance Doshas

The properties of certain gemstones may offer a helpful aid in yoking the mind—serving as anchors for focus, calm, and intention. Still, it’s wise to approach their use with curiosity and discernment. While these objects may carry symbolic or energetic resonance, I encourage a healthy amount of skepticism when it comes to overspending. Beauty and meaning need not come with a steep price tag. Hopefully, future research can offer deeper insight into the potential influence of crystals, gemstones, and metals on human well-being.

If this chapter resonates with you, consider experimenting: try placing a crystal or metal object under your bed at night, or meditating beside it. Notice how you feel. The impact may be subtle—or surprising. In yoga, the experience can be the teacher.

In Appendix 3 you will find a brief introduction to some of the crystals and gemstones used in yoga and meditation:
