Tongue Maps

Ayurveda practitioners believe they can understand much about a person’s health from their tongue (128).

As the following drawings show, different tongue parts are thought to correspond to different organs. The buildup of different tongue regions may signal underlying health conditions in other organs. Look at your own tongue in the mirror. Do you notice any patterns based upon the chart on the next page? In Ayurveda, the tongue is considered a diagnostic map of the body. Practitioners believe they can assess much about a person’s internal health simply by examining this small, often overlooked muscle (128). Each region of the tongue is thought to correspond to a different organ or system—offering visible clues about imbalances long before symptoms emerge.

Note: Ama refers to undigested waste. Malabsorption refers to the inability to absorb food, which may result in diarrhea.

As the above illustrations show, discoloration, coating, swelling, or dryness in specific areas may reflect disruptions in the lungs, heart, liver, stomach, or other vital systems. A buildup in one region, for instance, could point to stagnation or stress in a related organ.

Try this simple practice: look at your tongue in the mirror. What do you see? Compare what you notice to the chart on the next page. You may be surprised by how much your body is already trying to tell you—through something as ordinary as your tongue.
