matthochstetler_ebook.jpg

Self-Healing: A Guide to Finding Healing via Yoga and Ayuveda will help readers understand what yoga is, how yoga works (using modern medical terms), and seventeen different types of yoga to determine which is most useful for them. We will also cover an orientation of the ancient Indian healing science of Ayurveda to help readers complement conventional Western healing techniques. The book will save readers the tens of thousands of hours I have spent synthesizing hundreds of other texts.  There is no entirely new science included in this book, but it does distill hundreds of other texts in an easily approachable manner.

The book is divided into four sections:

  • Section 1: Yogic Concepts

This section explains what yoga is and is not. Yoga is defined through the lenses of major world religions that influenced the philosophy of yoga, primarily Buddhism and Indian Vedic religions such as Hinduism.  Modern scientific knowledge is then applied to contextualize our understanding about the way these practices affect anatomy. The section concludes with practical breathing tips, meditation techniques and tips. We will start by exploring the history of yoga. The yoga history discussion will include a primer of several key yogic concepts, including a detailed discussion of modern medicine as it relates to yoga. This is essentially an overview about how and why yoga works. We will then dive deeper through the      exploration of ancient Vedic and Tibetan texts. You will become acquainted with      mythical gods! I offer this information so that you are not blindly following a method that someone has prescribed to you. We will yoke our understanding.

  • Section 2: Types of Yoga

Seventeen different types of yoga are summarized with the intention of helping you find a type that resonates. No one method is better or worse, but the yoga must fit the individual. The goal is to help you understand which style will be most useful for you, and to provide a foundation of knowledge that will teach you how to distinguish between styles.

  • Section 3: Ayurveda

The ancient healing system of Ayurveda will be discussed, including doshas, which types of food you should eat based on your dosha, how to use essential oils with marma points and chakras, and several easy tips for applying Ayurvedic methods to your daily life. Vibrations, crystals, gemstones, and metal tips will also be offered. . Detailed food and lifestyle recommendations will be provided based on the dosha system. These recommendations will be supported by  modern science and can potentially supplement and amplify your yoga journey.

  • Section 4: Concluding Thoughts

This section will cover the complex topic of death and recap some of our jouney together.

One might think that there are already enough books written on yoga. But Matt Hochstetler’s book would prove you wrong. Matt has magically written a book that is vast and thorough in its scope, yet entertaining in its tone, and personal in its ability to easily connect with the reader. It also offers so much information about yoga as to satisfy your curiosity for a long time. I recommend this book for both students and teachers of yoga because it will not only widen your understanding, but also deepen your practice and open your heart.
